Mouth ulcers are painful sores that appear inside the mouth. They are painful at times as they are inside the mouth. They are uncomfortable but usually they are harmless and mostly clear up by themselves within a week or two. They are usually white, red, grey or yellow in color. You don’t need to consult a dentist for this and can be treated at home easily. But if they persist more than three weeks or they are turning red and swollen then yes they are a matter of concern and you should consult a doctor. Many of us confuse them with cold sores, which appear on outer lips and are caused by a virus. They appear on cheeks, lips, tongue or the inner lining of the mouth. They are usually swollen and cause a great discomfort for the mouth. Mouth ulcers can be painful, which can make it uncomfortable to eat, drink or brush your teeth.
- Most single mouth ulcers are caused by damage to the lining inside of the mouth.
- Usually, a single mouth ulcer is due to damage caused by biting the cheek or tongue, or by sharp teeth, brushing or poorly fitting dentures.
- There can be other reasons as well for mouth ulcers like hard food, a defective filling, hormonal changes in girls, eating the certain food, minor mouth injury, food sensitivities to acidic foods like citrus food, and other trigger foods like coffee and chocolates.
- Lack of certain essential vitamins like iron, zinc or B-12 may also lead to mouth ulcers. Indigestion, emotional stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, viral and bacterial infections are few of the causes of mouth ulcers.
- Use a soft toothbrush
- Eat comforting foods like yogurt, ice cream or fruit custards.
- Avoid spicy food
- Avoid addictive stuff like alcohol or tobacco
- In every meal drink cranberry juice
- Use a straw to intake liquids
- Avoid hard foods and beverages like coffee.
- Intake vitamin rich food.
- Eat a banana with curd as the first thing in the morning. This is the best measure to prevent mouth ulcers.
Home remedies can do wonders in treating these nasty ulcers and can relieve you from the pain and discomfort in your mouth. Here are few home remedies that you can try to get rid of mouth ulcers:
1. Coriander seeds
A coriander seed is an ayurvedic solution for treating ulcers. It reduces inflammation and treats swollen mouth ulcers to give you considerable relief. Boil a teaspoon of coriander seeds in a cup of water. Strain and gargle twice a day to cure mouth ulcers. You can use Coriander leaves boiled in water for mouth ulcers. Let the water cool down and gargle lukewarm water for at least 3-4 times a day and you will relief from pain.

2. Tulsi or Basil leaves
Tulsi and basil leave have antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial and antibiotic properties as well as have medicinal properties and hence helps in curing ulcers to a great extent. Wash 5-6 basil leaves thoroughly. Chewing 5 – 6 basil leaves (tulsi leaves) with some water every day will help you in getting rid of mouth ulcers. Repeat this procedure five to six times daily for better results. It also prevents the recurrence of ulcers.
3. Coconut milk
Coconut milk is a good medicine for ulcers. It is soothing and comforting for ulcers. It works as a cooling agent on ulcers. You can extract milk by grating fresh coconut or coconut milk is easily available in the market. Now gargle with this coconut milk for about three to four times a day. Or you can mix one tablespoon honey in coconut milk and apply the mixture on ulcers three or four times a day to get the best results. You can drink coconut water as well as it cools the body.
Honey helps in retaining moisture preventing dehydration and accelerates the healing process by hastening the new tissue growth. Take one teaspoon of honey and mix 1/4 teaspoon turmeric to make a paste. Now rub it on the ulcer. One of the proven remedy to cure mouth ulcer is to massage the gums in the mouth with a mixture of honey, glycerin, and coconut oil/vitamin E oil.
5. Liquorice root
Liquorice (Methi in Hindi) forms a protective coating on the mucous that resists irritation and soothes open sores. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is available in stem form and powder form as well. Rub the stem with a little water on grounding stone and apply on the ulcerated area. You can use Liquorice powder as well. You can mix it with honey and glycerin. Apply it on ulcers. Or you can mix the powder with lukewarm milk and turmeric and apply it on ulcers. You will get the best results as turmeric also reduces pain and has medicinal properties.
6. Poppy seeds
Poppy seeds or khus khus in Hindi gives a cooling effect to the body. Consumption of acidic food and spicy food causes the formation of too much heat in the body. And due to this mouth ulcers are formed. A poppy seed work the best in such conditions, balancing the pH of the mouth and body and thus gives a cooling and soothing effect. Mix sugar with poppy seeds and consume this mixture directly to get instant relief from mouth ulcers. Repeat it twice at least for immediate results.
7. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is an effective natural remedy for mouth ulcers. We all are aware of the goodness of Aloe Vera. It is medically proven that Aloe Vera deals the best with mouth problems like ulcers or cold sores. It has antibacterial properties and can do wonders in curing ulcers by clearing the mouth from any infections. Take at least two tablespoons of Aloe Vera gel or you can extract Aloe Vera juice directly from the aloe plant and apply it on mouth ulcers thrice daily for quick results. This will alleviate the pain, promotes healing and works as a natural antiseptic.

8. Baking Soda
The mouth ulcers caused by acidic foods are best cured by baking soda as it neutralizes the acid. It is also known as sodium bicarbonate. It may cause a burning sensation when applied on the mouth ulcers but works effectively to get rid of ulcers quickly. It reduces inflammation and kills bacteria and germs from the mouth thus fastening the healing process. You can directly put baking soda on the mouth ulcer or mix it with water to make a thin paste. Apply it twice a day to get better results.
Ice has the properties which numb the mouth ulcers thus reducing the pain and discomfort. It is an effective way to treat mouth ulcers. Directly apply ice on the ulcers and you will experience a tingling or a burning sensation in the mouth. This will help in curing ulcers at a faster pace. You can use cold water to rinse your mouth multiple times a day. This can also help in reducing the discomfort.
Celery has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It can prove out to be really good in curing mouth ulcers. It contains folic acid and vitamins B1, B2 AND B6. Simply chew a fresh stalk of celery. For best results after chewing celery place the pulp on the affected area for 10 minutes. You will see that the healing process is great. Repeat thrice a day for immediate relief.
11. Sea salt and Hydrogen peroxide
Both sea salt and hydrogen peroxide works as a disinfector and have antiseptic properties. You can use these ingredients separately or together to cure mouth ulcers. Add one tablespoon sea salt and 3% of hydrogen peroxide in warm water and stir the mixture well. You can use it for rinsing your mouth twice or thrice to get best results. Keep it in mind not to swallow the solution.
12. Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil has the ability to treat wounds as it has antiseptic properties. It heals the skin tissues and prevents infection. It soothes the inflamed skin and acts as a perfect mouthwash. Dab two drops of tea tree oil directly on the ulcer, doing this will reduce the redness around the sore and also reduces the inflammation caused due to ulcers. Make your own antiseptic mouthwash with ten drops of tea tree oil in 1/3 cup of water. Swish this mouthwash for more than 30 seconds and spit it out. This helps you cure the infection and heals the sore.

13. Indian Gooseberry (Amla)
It is rich in vitamin C and acts as a body coolant. It works as an antioxidant and balances stomach acid. Ulcers caused due to consumption of acidic food or hard beverages can be cured well by Indian gooseberry. Make a paste of Indian gooseberry and apply it on the sore directly. Repeat this process at least twice a day and notice the quick results.
